Protests scheduled in Tamil Nadu on November 9; disruption likely

TIMEFRAME expected from 11/9/2020, 12:00 AM until 11/10/2020, 11:59 PM (Asia/Kolkata). COUNTRY/REGION Tamil Nadu

Protests are scheduled to take place across Tamil Nadu state on Monday, November 9. The demonstrations have been organized by workers affiliated with the Labour Progressive Federation (LPF), a trade union forming part of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam political party. Participants of the demonstrations are set to gather at the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation Limited (TASMAC) and the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation regional offices at approximately 10:00 (local time). Demonstrations are also likely to take place outside of workers' respective regional offices. Additional demonstrations are likely throughout urban centers, including Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, and Salem.

The demonstration is being held to denounce the government's recent decision to give union workers a 10 percent bonus, while the workers are demanding a 20 percent bonus.

A heightened security presence and localized transport disruptions are likely in the vicinity of the protest sites.

Those in Tamil Nadu are advised to monitor developments, avoid any protest and demonstration locations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
