A vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) attack targeted the police headquarters of Almar district (Faryab province) on Monday evening, November 9, killing four policemen and wounding 20 others, including eight civilians. The explosion was followed by a gunfight which reportedly continued until Tuesday morning, November 10. Shops and houses were damaged in the assault, and the district police chief is reportedly among the wounded. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
A heightened security presence is likely in the area in the near term. Further attacks are also likely in Faryab and across Afghanistan over the medium term.
Those in Faryab province are advised to avoid the affected area, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
The security environment in Afghanistan remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
