Iraq News Alert

Demonstrators gather in Baghdad on November 9; further protests likely over the near term

TIMEFRAME expected from 11/10/2020, 12:00 AM until 11/12/2020, 11:59 PM (Asia/Baghdad). COUNTRY/REGION Baghdad

Demonstrations continued in central Baghdad City on Monday, November 9. On the morning of Monday, dozens of university graduates held a demonstration close to the Prime Minister's office in the Allawi area demanding jobs. A number of injuries were reported in scuffles between Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) and protesters. Despite these physical altercations, there were no reports of significant violence between attendees and ISF.

Similarly, on Monday, dozens of government employees continued protesting outside the Ministry of Finance in Rusafa district of Baghdad, demanding payment of their delayed monthly wages.

Further unrest over the issues is likely in the near term. Any demonstrations are likely to be accompanied by a heightened security presence and localized disruptions to transport.

Those in Baghdad are advised to closely monitor the situation, avoid all protests and large public gatherings, anticipate disruptions to transportation and services in areas affected by demonstrations, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.

The security environment in Iraq remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas with proper security protocols in place, other areas should be considered strictly off-limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to all travel.
