Israel News Alert

Military sources report suspected Hezbollah drone from Lebanon downed after entering Israeli airspace on November 10; further cross border incidents possible in the medium term

TIMEFRAME expected from 11/10/2020, 12:00 AM until 11/12/2020, 11:59 PM (Asia/Jerusalem). COUNTRY/REGION West Bank

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) reported on Tuesday, November 10, that it shot down a suspected Hezbollah drone near the Lebanese border. The IDF had reportedly been tracking the aircraft and destroyed it as soon as it entered Israeli airspace. The IDF stated that at no point was there any danger to Israeli communities or forces. The drone was downed through electronic means and the device is being investigated to discover if it was being used for surveillance or if it was armed.

Further cross-border incidents along the Lebanese border are likely to continue in the medium term and reprisal operations by the IDF are possible in the near term.

Hezbollah is a Shi'a militant group and political party based out of Lebanon. Israeli officials are concerned that as the fighting in Syria slows, Iran and Hezbollah will attempt to maintain a permanent presence along the Israeli border. Hezbollah and Israel have been engaged in numerous armed conflicts over the past 30 years, including the month-long 2006 war between the two parties.

Those along the Lebanese/Israeli border are advised to monitor the situation, anticipate a heightened security presence, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
