Six buses set on fire in Dhaka on November 12; further unrest likely in near term

TIMEFRAME expected from 11/12/2020, 12:00 AM until 11/13/2020, 11:59 PM (Asia/Dhaka). COUNTRY/REGION Dhaka

At least six buses were set on fire in Dhaka on Thursday afternoon, November 12, in the Motijheel, Bongshal, Shahbagh, Khilgaon areas of the capital, and in the vicinity of the secretariat intersection adjacent to the National Press Club, and the Awami League office in Bangabandhu Avenue. According to the authorities, all six buses were set on fire between 12:35 and 14:28 (local time) amid unrest linked to local elections. No casualties have been reported as a result of the incidents.

The incidents on Thursday follow a security alert issued by the US Embassy in Dhaka after five buses were set on fire and multiple crude explosive devices were detonated in the city's Dilkusha and Uttara areas on Wednesday, November 11.

Heightened security measures should be anticipated in the vicinity of the incidents. Election-related disruption is possible in the near term.

Members in Dhaka are advised to anticipate disruptions to overland travel in the immediate term. Follow authority advice and maintain a heightened sense of situational awareness.
