The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) stated that 34 civilians had been killed in an attack on a passenger bus in the western Benishangul-Gumuz region late on Saturday, November 14. The EHRC added that the death toll was likely to rise as further information became available. The exact location of the attack is not yet known.
Similar attacks have been reported in the Benishangul-Gumuz region in recent months, with 12 being killed there in October and 15 in September. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has Sudan for training those involved in past attacks in the region.
Further similar attacks cannot be ruled out over the near term.
Those in Benishangul-Gumuz region are advised to monitor the situation, remain vigilant for security operations and militant activity, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
