Event

A suicide bombing, or person-borne improvised explosive device (PBIED), was carried out in Mogadishu on Tuesday, November 17, resulting in at least three people killed. The incident occurred at approximately 12:53 (local time) in the vicinity of the General Kahiye Police Academy compound in the Hamar Jabjab district of the capital. An unknown number of people have also suffered injuries, among them police officers. No group has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but Al-Shabaab militants frequently carry out attacks against government troops and security forces.

Emergency response teams have been deployed and police have cordoned off the area. A heightened security presence and localized disruptions are expected in the vicinity in the immediate term.

Context

Al-Shabaab continues to control large zones in the south and center of Somalia and attacks from the group are frequent across the country, including in Mogadishu. The group often targets government officials and military infrastructure in a bid to topple the Western and UN-backed government and impose its own strict interpretation of Islam in Somalia.

Advice

Those in Mogadishu are advised to avoid the abovementioned area in the immediate term, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
