Rocket fire kills one in Baghdad November 17
Event
At least two rockets landed within the US Embassy compound in Baghdad's International Zone at approximately 22:35 (local time) on Tuesday, November 17. The rockets landed in the area despite the activation of air defense systems deployed at the Embassy. There are no current reports of injuries, fatalities, or structural damage. The rockets are believed to have been fired from the Karada area and whilst the attack has been attributed to hard-line Shia militias, it remains unclear if they have claimed responsibility.
Similar attacks are possible in Baghdad over the near term.
Context
This incident is the first of its kind since the announcement of the suspension of attacks by hard-line Shia militias on October 11. The attack coincides with a statement issued by the US Department of Defense on November 17 on plans to reduce the presence of US troops in Iraq.
Advice
Individuals in Baghdad are advised to closely monitor the situation, avoid the affected area, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments. The security environment in Iraq remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas with proper security protocols in place, other areas should be considered strictly off-limits.
