The Air Component of Operation Thunder Strike conducted an aerial bombardment on a suspected bandit camp off the Kaduna-Abuja Expressway in the vicinity of Kagarko Local Government Area (Kaduna state) on Tuesday, November 17. The airstrikes targeted positions north of the Kuku area in Kagarko's Janjala. Reports indicate that "scores" of bandits were killed in the strikes, although this was not immediately confirmed, and an exact casualty figure has not been released. The aerial campaign, conducted by the Nigerian Air Force, was carried out alongside ground operations.
Dozens of travelers have been abducted and several killed by bandits over the past week in the vicinity of the highway.
Further security operations are to be expected in the northwest of Nigeria in the near term. Further attacks by bandits are also likely over the medium term.
Those in Kaduna state are advised to monitor developments, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments. The security environment in Nigeria remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
