VBIED detonation kills two in Kandahar on November 19; further attacks possible

The detonation of a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) has killed two civilians and wounded 20 others in Kandahar city on Thursday, November 19. Media sources indicate that an explosive-laden motorcycle was detonated near a police checkpoint in Police District 3 (PD3) on Thursday evening. The deputy police chief of Kandahar and one other police officer were reportedly among those wounded. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

Localized disruptions and a heightened security presence are likely in the vicinity of the blast in the near term. Attacks are likely to occur in Kandahar province, and across Afghanistan, in the medium term.
