Mortar attack kills seven on outskirts of Kunduz November 18

Afghanistan News Alert

Taliban mortar attack kills seven in Taloka area of Kunduz on November 18; further attacks likely in Kunduz province and across country in near term

TIMEFRAME expected from 11/20/2020, 12:00 AM until 11/22/2020, 11:59 PM (Asia/Kabul). COUNTRY/REGION Kunduz

At least seven civilians were killed, and six others injured in a Taliban mortar attack on the outskirts of Kunduz city on Wednesday, November 18. Reports indicate that a mortar hit civilian houses in the Taloka area on Wednesday morning at approximately 03:00 (local time). Heavy clashes between Afghan security forces and Taliban militants have taken place in Dasht-e-Archi district and Kunduz city recently. The Taliban is yet to comment.

Similar attacks and further heavy fighting is expected in the region in the near term.

Taliban militants launch attacks on government personnel, security forces, and civilians in Afghanistan on a near-daily basis. Such assaults are, in part, intended to undermine the perceived capacity of the ANSF - and the Afghan government more broadly - to adequately provide security in the wake of the withdrawal of most US-led NATO forces from the country.

Those in Kunduz province are advised to monitor developments in their own particular area of operations through a range of multi-source intelligence advisories and should heed all instructions issued by local authorities or their home governments.

The security environment in Afghanistan remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
