Violent clashes take place during nationwide protests on November 18; avoid all demonstrations as a precaution

TIMEFRAME expected from 11/20/2020, 12:00 AM until 11/22/2020, 11:59 PM (America/Port-au-Prince). COUNTRY/REGION Haiti

Event

On Wednesday, November 18, the National Union of Haitian Normaliens (UNNOH) called for nationwide protests over various issues including unemployment, poverty, rampant kidnapping, and the resignation of President Jovenel Moise. One demonstration was set to take place in front of the US Embassy in Port-au-Prince. Towns in Jacmel province, Mirebalais, Les Cayes, Saint-Marc, and others reported turnouts of hundreds of protesters. The demonstrations progressed into vandalism and violence. Local sources indicate that a clash with police left several demonstrators injured and one reportedly shot and killed. Several arrests took place as well.

Further demonstrations are likely across Haiti in the near term. Protests in Haiti can quickly escalate and frequently involve clashes between demonstrators and security forces, with roadblocks often set up by demonstrators, as well as the burning of objects and live gunfire. A heightened security presence is likely in the vicinity of the protests, with an associated risk of localized travel disruptions.

Advice

Those in Haiti are advised to monitor developments, avoid all protests and demonstrations, anticipate localized disruptions to transportation and business operations, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.
