Cameroon News Alert

IED explosion injures three in Douala’s Bonaberi district on November 18; heightened security anticipated in the area in the near term

TIMEFRAME expected from 11/20/2020, 12:00 AM until 11/22/2020, 11:59 PM (Africa/Douala). COUNTRY/REGION Douala, Bonaberi

At least three people were injured in an explosion on Wednesday night, November 18, in Douala's Bonaberi district. The incident took place at "Entrée Bonandale" at around 22:30 (local time); reports indicate that an improvised explosive device (IED) was thrown from a passing motorcycle. Security forces established a security perimeter following the incident and the wounded were transferred to local medical facilities. Two suspects, who were also among those injured, have been arrested and are believed to be natives of the Northwest Region.

Localized disruptions and a heightened security presence is expected in the area in the near term.

The incident in Douala comes as security in Yaoundé has been heightened following several IED explosion blasts in the city over the past few months. These explosions caused little damage and only minor injuries, but the incidents have raised concerns over the potential terrorism threat in Yaoundé. Although no group has yet claimed responsibility for the bombings, there has been speculation that they could be linked to the ongoing insurgency in the Anglophone Northwest and Southwest regions.

Those in Douala are advised to monitor developments, anticipate an increased security presence in the city, and immediately report any suspicious items or activity to security forces.
