Protesters gather in Cape Town’s Kraaifontein area on November 27; anticipate disruptions

TIMEFRAME expected from 11/27/2020, 12:00 AM until 11/28/2020, 11:59 PM (Africa/Johannesburg). COUNTRY/REGION Kraaifontein

Protesters affiliated with the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party have gathered in the Kraaifontein area of Cape Town on Friday, November 27, to call attention to social issues in the area including poor service delivery and gender-based violence. The march commenced at 07:00 (local time) with organizers stating that the protesters would march on local municipal offices, the police station, and the local day hospital. A number of roads have been closed in the area, including part of Old Paarl and Botfontein roads. Reports indicate that tires have been burned, blocking some roads and that protesters have thrown stones. It is unclear if police have intervened to reopen the blocked travel routes.

A heightened security presence and localized transport disruptions are likely in the vicinity of the demonstration.

Those in Kraaifontein are advised to monitor the situation, avoid demonstrations and political gatherings as a precaution, and heed any instructions issued by local authorities.
