Event

Militants killed six farmers and wounded another near the village of Farabougou (Koulikoro region) on Thursday, November 26. Suspected jihadists have now killed 23 people since a siege of the village began in October. Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) had claimed to have regained control of the village on October 22 following a two-week blockade; however, the militants have reportedly not been dislodged from the village and continue to carry out attacks and burn crops.

Further militant attacks are likely to take place in the area over the near term. A heightened security presence is also expected in light of recent attacks.

Context

The blockade of Farabougou started with the abduction of several residents of the village, with the attackers allegedly accusing the inhabitants, who are mainly from the Bambara ethnic group, of being involved in the deaths of members of the Fulani community.

Advice

The security environment in Mali remains complex, particularly in the north and central regions, and those in the country should heed any directives issued by local authorities. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
