Runoff elections are scheduled to be held in 57 municipalities across Brazil, including in the cities of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro on Sunday, November 29. Voters will head to the polls to cast their ballots for the mayoral and city council races in the first elections since President Jair Bolsonaro was elected in 2018. Thousands of local security forces have been deployed to voting areas to preserve order and to enforce coronavirus (COVID-19) social distancing measures.

A heightened security presence and localized transport disruptions are expected in the vicinity of any demonstration and clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Those in Brazil are advised to monitor the situation, avoid the protest sites as a precaution, anticipate delays to transport, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
