India News Alert

Organizations plan to block roads nationwide across India on December 6; disruptions likely

TIMEFRAME expected from 12/1/2020, 12:00 AM until 12/6/2020, 11:59 PM (Asia/Kolkata). COUNTRY/REGION India

Event

The Adivasi Senghal Abhiyan (ASA) tribal organization and Janata Dal (United) party plan to block roads nationwide across India Dec. 6 to demand the central government pass a separate religious code for the Adivasi Sarna community. Organizers argue the separate code is crucial for tribal communities to retain their cultural and religious identity. The highest participation is likely in Jharkhand, Bihar, Assam, Odisha, and West Bengal states, where ASA is based, as well as Chhattisgarh State. Activists could block highways connecting major cities, such as National Highways 20 and 49. Related protests could attract several dozens to a few hundred people. Organizers also plan to hold demonstrations leading up to the nationwide action in cities between Dec. 2 and Dec. 4, with the largest gatherings likely in Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand. However, these demonstrations are unlikely to cause major disruptions. Further protests are possible after Dec. 6.

Security personnel will likely monitor gatherings and may enforce coronavirus disease (COVID-19) gathering restrictions. Clashes are possible, especially if police forcibly attempt to disperse protesters. Transport disruptions are probable, as demonstrators will likely attempt to block major highways and roadways in cities and towns. Police may divert traffic from demonstration sites.

Advice

Monitor trusted local media sources for updates on protests and road conditions, as organizers may not announce demonstration locations in advance. Avoid protests due to possible clashes. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately. Heed all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time near protests.
