Lebanon: Anti-government protesters to march from Adliyeh to the Port of Beirut on December 4

Lebanon News Alert

Anti-government protesters plan to march from Adliyeh to the Port of Beirut in Beirut, Lebanon from 1500 Dec. 4. Avoid the area.

TIMEFRAME expected from 12/4/2020, 12:01 AM until 12/4/2020, 11:59 PM (UTC). COUNTRY/REGION Beirut

Event

Lebanese activists plan to hold an anti-government demonstration at the Port of Beirut on Dec. 4. The purpose of the action is to denounce alleged government corruption and mismanagement in the wake of the Aug. 4 explosion at the port. Participants will first gather in Adliyeh at 1500 before marching to the port facility. This latest planned protest comes amid ongoing anti-government demonstrations that began in October 2019 demanding an overhaul of Lebanon’s political system and the resignation of political elites.

Previous protests have drawn thousands of participants. The gathering will likely be well-attended given the public anger following the port explosion and the preexisting grievances against the government. Demonstrators may burn tires and block major roadways during the event, prompting ground travel disruptions. Security forces will almost certainly deploy to monitor the protest. Clashes between security forces and protesters may occur if participants ignore police orders or are overly disruptive.

Advice

Avoid the protest due to the potential for violence. Allow ample time to reach destinations near Adliyeh and the Port of Beirut, Dec 4. Do not attempt to pass through roadblocks; wait for authorities to remove them. Be alert for residual debris and sharp objects if driving on previously blocked roads. Heed the instructions of local security personnel. Remain courteous and cooperative if approached and questioned by law enforcement officers.
