Chile: Activists to hold an anti-government protest in Santiago on December 5

Chile News Alert

Activists to protest at La Moneda Palace in Santiago, Chile, from 1100 Dec. 5. Heightened security likely; clashes possible.

TIMEFRAME expected from 12/5/2020, 4:00 AM until 12/6/2020, 5:00 AM (UTC). COUNTRY/REGION Santiago

Activists plan to stage an anti-government protest at La Moneda Palace in Santiago from 1100 Dec. 5. The action is over a range of issues, including those relating to the Chilean police (carabineros), Congress, illegal immigration, and religion. La Moneda has become a flashpoint for anti-government protests in the capital recently and the demonstration is likely to draw large crowds.

Police will almost certainly deploy to monitor the protest and enforce movement restrictions. Violence is possible at all anti-government demonstrations in the capital. Police commonly use teargas and water cannon to disperse crowds; protesters often throw bricks and stones at police and police vehicles. Localized traffic disruptions are likely, including on La Alameda, otherwise known as Avenida Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins, a major thoroughfare in the city along which protesters commonly march.

Avoid all protests. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately and seek shelter in the nearest secure location. Heed the instructions of security personnel. Plan for localized traffic disruptions in central Santiago Dec. 5.
