Anti-government activists are planning to gather in central Amsterdam Jan. 17 to denounce ongoing restrictions related to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic among other issues. Participants will gather between 1300-1500 on Museumplatz. Attendance could reach the low hundreds. Smaller-scale protests denouncing the government response to the pandemic are possible elsewhere in the city on the weekend of Jan. 16-17.
Police will likely deploy to monitor any gatherings. Associated security measures could prompt localized disruptions. Current COVID-19 measures in Amsterdam include the mandatory use of facemasks in crowded spaces and strict social distancing; police could move to disperse protesters if they are deemed to be in breach of these restrictions, which could prompt isolated scuffles.
Anticipate localized disruptions around Museumplatz on the afternoon of Jan. 17. Plan routes avoiding the area to minimize the possibility of any disruptions.
