On Thursday, July 6, at least eight people - including seven children - were killed and some 60 others injured in a stampede that occurred during Independence Day celebrations being held at the Bingu National Stadium in the capital Lilongwe. According to a local journalist, the stampede took place as people tried to enter the Bingu stadium, which was scheduled to hold a free soccer game as part of Independence Day celebrations. The stadium, which has a 45,000 seat capacity, was reportedly full and people refused to turn away when asked to do so. This prompted police to fire tear gas into the crowd, which created a panic.
Individuals present in Malawi are advised to exercise caution and to avoid all demonstrations and large gatherings. People present in Lilongwe are advised to avoid the area of the stampede.
