Event

Several trade unions (including CGT, Sud), political parties (EELV, NPA), and civic groups are organizing a rally at Place de la République beginning at 15:00 (local time) on Saturday, July 1, in opposition to the ongoing state of emergency in the country. The demonstration’s route is still unknown. However, a heavy security presence is expected. Transportation disruptions in the area, including the potential closure of the Place de la République metro station, are likely. Clashes between protesters and police are possible.

Context

There have been regular demonstrations against the ongoing state of emergency since it was implemented on November 13, 2015. The decision by recently elected President Emmanuel Macron to continue the state of emergency by executive order has been opposed by various civil society groups. Additional large-scale demonstration may occcur in the coming months.
