Uganda: Potential demonstrations in Kyadondo East on June 29

Tensions remain high in Kampala after arrest and subsequent release of opposition candidate Bobi Wine on June 27; demonstrations possible leading up to election on June 29

TIMEFRAME expected from 6/27/2017, 12:00 AM until 6/29/2017, 11:59 PM (Africa/Kampala). COUNTRY/REGION Uganda

Bobi Wine, a candidate for the Kyadondo East constituency in Kampala, was arrested and subsequently released by local authorities on Tuesday, June 27. In a speech given upon his release, Wine cited the visit of President Yoweri Museveni to the general vicinity of his rally as the cause of his arrest. However, a spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Police denied Wine had been arrested. Demonstrations are likely leading up to the election on Thursday, June 29.

The 2016 election of Apollo Kantinti as Member of Parliament (MP) for the Kyadondo East district in Kampala was nullified by the High Court due to electoral irregularities. Campaigning for the seat’s by-election began on June 2.

Individuals in Kampala are advised to avoid all public demonstrations as a precautionary measure.
