At least three people were killed - including one French national - when a bomb exploded at the Centro Andino shopping center in the El Retiro area of Bogotá at around 17:00 (local time) on Saturday, June 17; at least nine more were reported injured. The bomb was planted in a toilet in a women's restroom. No motive for the bombing has been given and no group has claimed responsibility; however, the capital's Mayor Enrique Penalosa has denounced the incident as a "cowardly terrorist attack." The roads around the mall have been cordoned off and transportation disruptions should be expected. No further threat has currently been identified, but investigations are ongoing.
The Andino shopping center is located in an upscale area of the capital popular with foreigners.
All those present in Bogotá are advised to avoid the area surrounding the Andino shopping center until authorities complete their investigations and to anticipate road closures and travel delays in the area. Report any suspicious objects or behavior to the authorities.
