Judges throughout the country are currently holding a 48-hour strike starting from Thursday, June 8, to denounce the interference with the independence of the judiciary. All of the 42 courts across the island are reportedly closed. A spokesperson for the government announced that negotiations between the government and the Ministry of Justice will be held at a yet-to-determine date.


Judges are denouncing executive interference in certain judiciary cases, the non-application of several court decisions, particularly regarding people close to the government, and threats against judicial officals.


Individuals present in Madagascar are advised to monitor developments to the situation and to avoid all demonstrations.
