The Hong Kong Observatory has warned that heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast for southern China, Hong Kong included, from Saturday, June 3, through at least Monday, June 5. Flash flooding is possible in Hong Kong and may disrupt road traffic and public transportation.

As a reminder, the Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races is due to take place in Victoria Harbor June 2-4. The Central Waterfront will likely be extremely crowded during events. A candlelight vigil is also planned on Sunday, June 4, at the Victoria Park.

June 4 marks the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 and is traditionally marked by peaceful demonstrations in Hong Kong. Some 125,000 people took part in the 2016 vigil, despite a student-led boycott.

Hong Kong’s Dragon Boat Festival, also known as the Tueng Ng Festival, goes back to the third century and is well known for its colorful boats disguised as dragons for the occasion. The festival attracts hundreds of international rowing teams every year.

Individuals present in Hong Kong are advised to monitor the situation via local weather outlets and allow more time for local journeys.
