The second round of presidential elections was held without major incident on Sunday, December 17, following the inconclusive first round held on November 19. Conservative candidate (and former president) Sebastián Piñera of the Chile Vamos coalition was victorious with 54.6 percent of the vote, beating out Alejandro Guillier of the Socialist party.
Piñera will take office in March 2018.
Both the first round of voting as well as the campaign period were marked by apathy and low turnout.
