On Thursday, February 8, dozens of university and high school professors staged a protest in Baabda, near the presidential palace, to denounce new pay scales. Clashes erupted between demonstrators and security forces; one police officer was sent to the hospital. At least five people were arrested for attempting to block roads leading to the presidential palace.

Professor unions have threatened to hold a general strike in the near future to condemn the police’s violent response.

Individuals in Lebanon are advised to monitor the situation and to avoid any potential protests.
