Event

A 7.2-magnitude earthquake hit 4 km (2.5 mi) south of Pinotepa de Don Luis in the southwestern state of Oaxaca around 17:40 (local time) on Friday, February 16. A 5.8-magnitude aftershock was registered 10 km (6 mi) southeast of Santiago Jamiltepec, Oaxaca, at approximately 18:35. No casualties have been reported, but the earthquake caused significant material damages in Oaxaca state. While tremors were felt in Mexico City, no major damages were reported. Further aftershocks are possible in the coming hours.

Individuals present in the area are advised to monitor developments to the situation via media reports and to adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), to move away from windows, and to not attempt to leave the building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
