Security forces in Yaoundé reportedly arrested at least 200 protesting teachers on Wednesday, February 28. The teachers were arrested during a demonstration organized by unions to demand better working conditions. On Thursday, March 1, teacher unions boycotted talks with government officials, demanding that the detained teachers be released.

Further street protests are possible in the coming days, particularly in Yaoundé. Increased security measures and traffic disruptions are to be anticipated in the vicinity of any gatherings.

Around 5000 teachers from different parts of the country took to the streets of the capital Yaoundé on February 28, amid an ongoing series of teacher strikes to demand payment of overdue salaries and bonuses.

Individuals present in Yaoundé are advised to monitor developments to the situation and avoid all protests due to the potential for violence.
