On Thursday, March 1, Mexican authorities discovered two undetonated explosive devices on a ferry that provides service between Cozumel and Playa del Carmen (Quintana Roo state). The incident prompted the US Embassy in Mexico to issue a security alert prohibiting US government employees from taking ferries operating along the route until further notice. Mexican authorities have launched an associated investigation into the devices.

An explosion rocked a ferry operating on the same route on February 21, wounding 25 people when the ferry was unloading passengers in Playa del Carmen.

Individuals in Quintana Roo state are advised to avoid taking ferries along the Cozumel-Quintana Roo route, remain vigilant for suspicious objects or behavior, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
