Hundreds of people rallied on Sunday, April 29, and Monday, April 30, in Nouakchott to call for the government to end slavery in Mauritania. According to local sources, demonstrators gathered around the Ibn Abas mosque.
Further protests, as well as associated traffic disruptions and a heightened security presence, are possible in the coming days.
Individuals present in Nouakchott are advised to monitor local media for updates and to avoid all political events and public gatherings as violence may flare up without warning.
