South Africa: Fuel tax protest planned in Pretoria July 31

South Africa Alerte de sécurité

Political and civil organizers prepare to protest fuel taxes in Pretoria on July 31; localized traffic disruptions expected

TIMEFRAME expected from 31/7/2018, 12h00 until 31/7/2018, 11h59 (Africa/Johannesburg). COUNTRY/REGION Pretoria

The opposition party Democratic Alliance (DA) and several civil society groups are planning a demonstration in Pretoria on Tuesday, July 31, to protest high fuel prices. DA leader Mmusi Maimane is demanding a 20 percent reduction in the fuel levy. The march is planned to take place in Pretoria's central business district (CBD), focused around Church Square. Protesters are expected to march from the corner of Bosman and Dr. WF Nkomo streets and head to the National Treasury building. The march will begin at 10:00 (local time) and is expected to conclude around 14:00. Revenue collected by the fuel levy is allocated to the Road Accident Fund (RAF), which the DA claims has a history of mismanagement.

Individuals in Pretoria are advised to avoid all demonstrations as a precaution and expect travel delays and street closures in and around the CBD. Specifically, the following streets will be closed: Bosman, Dr. WF Nkomo, Paul Kruger, and Madiba.
