Fighting between pro-government groups in Taiz leaves 18 people dead as of August 14; additional clashes possible in Taiz in the coming days

15 août 20h57 UTC
TIMEFRAME expected from 15/8/2018, 12h00 until 17/8/2018, 11h59 (Asia/Aden). COUNTRY/REGION Taiz (Taiz province)

Fighters loyal to two rival pro-government groups - one loyal to Vice President Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar and the other to Aboul Abbas, a militia leader - have clashed in Taiz (Taiz province) in recent days, leaving at least 18 people dead as of Tuesday, August 14. Additional clashes are possible between the factions in Taiz over the coming days.

The fighting comes as a roadside bomb attack targeted the governor of Taiz province on August 14. The provincial governor was reportedly unharmed by the blast; however, several others were wounded in the attack. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, and it was unclear if the incident was related to ongoing violence in Taiz province as of August 15.

Yemen is engaged in a complex and deadly conflict, ongoing since Houthi rebels entered into a civil war with the Yemeni government, supported by a Saudi-led coalition, in 2015. More than 10,000 Yemenis have died in the fighting and over 2.5 million have been displaced.

The security environment in Yemen remains complex. Due to poor security conditions, many Western governments strongly advise their citizens against all travel to Yemen. Travel to the country should only be considered with proper security protocols in place. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
