On Sunday, August 19, Algeria and Mauritania opened the first formal border crossing between the two countries near the Algerian town of Tindouf (Tindouf province). According to Algerian media sources, the crossing was opened to foster trade and to facilitate security operations in the area. A heightened security presence is to be anticipated in the Tindouf area over the coming months.
Travelers are advised to follow all instructions issued by the authorities. On a more general note, individuals present in Mauritania should remain vigilant at all times due to various security concerns. Due to the threat of kidnapping, it is critical that foreigners remain discreet regarding personal details, particularly information concerning nationality, employment, family, etc.
