Heavy rains hit central Darfur and Northern states on Saturday, September 8, causing significant damage in several areas. At least two people were killed by flooding in Niereteti (Darfur state) and over 700 homes were damaged. In Deleig, flash flooding destroyed over 1000 houses and washed away portions of farm land. Authorities closed the road between Zalingei and Garsila in Darfur state due to the high water levels. In the Manawashi Valley, three buses were reportedly pushed off the road while traveling between El Fasher and Nyala. Local media also reported that a woman was killed in Merowe (Northern state) after a roof collapsed on her. Recovery efforts are ongoing as of Monday, September 10, and casualty figures may rise as more information is released.

In Sudan, the rainy season typically lasts from June to September/October, and often leads to widespread and persistent flooding. Sudan also suffers from underdeveloped infrastructure, especially in rural areas, which makes it harder to respond to natural disasters effectively.

Individuals present in Sudan are advised to follow all instructions issued by local authorities (e.g. possible evacuation orders), allow additional time to travel, and monitor the situation via local media and weather reporting outlets. Please be advised that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock an adult over.
