Event

An indefinite strike launched by thousands of hotel workers in Chicago (Illinois) on Friday, September 7, continues as of September 14 with no indication of when the work stoppage may end. Twenty-six hotels are currently affected by the strike (full list here). Although affected hotels remain operational, some disruptions have been reported, including closed restaurants, long lines at check-in, and unmade rooms. Striking workers have been picketing continuously in front of hotels since September 7, with a large march held on the Magnificent Mile on September 14 to mark the end of the strike's first week. Further demonstrations are possible in the coming days. A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are expected near all demonstration sites.

Unite Here Local 1, the union which represents the hotel workers is currently in negotiations with 30 hotels in Chicago after contracts expired on August 31. Workers are demanding improved benefits.

Advice

Individuals present in Chicago are advised to avoid demonstrations as a precaution and allow for additional time to reach their destinations during the strikes.
