Unions representing university professors are continuing with their nationwide strike launched on September 3. The strike is currently expected to run until Saturday, September 22. Consequently, all eight Nigerien universities remain closed, thus disrupting the start of the academic year initially scheduled for September 3. Professors announced that further strikes were likely if their demands remained unmet. Associated demonstrations are possible in cities throughout Niger, notably in the capital Niamey.
According to union representatives, the strike is being held to demand the payments of salary arrears as well as better working conditions.
Individuals in Niger are advised to avoid all protests due to the risk of violence and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
