Event

Students and faculty from more than a dozen UNAM (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México) campuses will hold a strike on Thursday, September 27, to demand justice for the 43 students who disappeared during a protest in Guerrero state on September 26, 2014. Associated protests with the potential to disrupt traffic are possible.

Thousands of people took part in an associated march in the capital Mexico City on September 26, during which some 100 protesters were detained by police.

Context

The 43 students disappeared while holding a protest in Iguala, Guerrero. They are believed to have been kidnapped and presumably killed by corrupt local officials working in conjunction with the crime syndicate Guerreros Unidos. The incident became a symbol of the state of violence in Mexico, connections between organized crime and local government, and the ineffective response of the federal government to rising crime.

Advice

Individuals in Mexico are advised to avoid all protests as a precaution due to the risk of violence.
