The Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an armed Islamist group, has claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing carried out in Gao's 8th quarter on Monday, November 12. Attackers detonated a suicide vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (SVBIED) targeting two villas belonging to the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) around 19:30 (local time). Three civilians were killed and four employees of a UN contractor were injured. Further such attacks are likely in the near-term.
Due to the presence of various armed groups, Mali's northern and central regions remain unstable despite the presence of the MINUSMA, one of the largest UN peacekeeping missions in the world.
Individuals are advised to avoid the area until further notice. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel to Mali.
