Thailand: Increasing tensions ahead of 2019 general elections

Thailand Alerte de sécurité

Several parties voice concerns over 2019 general elections, indicative of slowly increasing tensions

TIMEFRAME expected from 22/11/2018, 12h00 until 25/2/2019, 11h59 (Asia/Bangkok). COUNTRY/REGION Thailand

On Thursday, November 22, several political parties demanded that the Election Commission delay the general elections, currently scheduled to take place on February 24, 2019. They claim that they need more time to prepare and are seeking a postponement of the vote to May 5, the last day possible according to constitutional stipulations.

Thailand's military-led government has already delayed the elections on several occasions. Political tensions are expected to increase in the run-up to the vote. A long-running ongoing ban on political gatherings should be lifted in December, ahead of the election, which will mean an increase in gatherings, rallies, and demonstrations.

Individuals in Thailand are advised to monitor developments and avoid all gatherings as a precaution.
