Event

Police have detained at least 18 people as thousands of "yellow vest" protesters gathered in Paris on Saturday, November 24, to denounce rising fuel prices and the economic policies of President Emmanuel Macron's administration. Notably, some 5000 protesters congregated on Avenue des Champs-Élysées and nearby thoroughfares, with some erecting barricades, setting fires, and clashing with police. In response, police have fired tear gas, water cannons, and rubber projectiles to disperse the protesters.

A heightened security presence and significant transportation disruptions are to be expected in Paris over the coming hours. Similar protests are to be expected nationwide over the coming hours and days. Disruptions are to be anticipated on highways throughout the country, notably in areas around airports.

Context

The "yellow vest" movement launched protests on November 17 against rising fuel prices and a planned fuel tax. Hundreds of thousands have engaged in slow-rolling protests to block roads and highways, causing significant traffic disruptions. Two people have been killed and over 550 injured in traffic incidents.

The government is planning a tax increase on fuel prices, including gasoline and diesel, beginning on January 1, 2019, to promote environmentally friendly practices.

Advice

Individuals in Paris and elsewhere in France are advised to monitor developments to the situation, allow for extra time to reach their destinations, and avoid all protests as a precaution.
