Nicaragua Alerte de sécurité

Civil society organizations to hold unauthorized march in Managua November 25 amid heightened police presence; localized traffic disruptions expected

TIMEFRAME expected from 24/11/2018, 12h00 until 25/11/2018, 11h59 (America/Managua). COUNTRY/REGION Managua

Event

Supporters of the Blue and White National Unit (UNAB) and the Civil Alliance for Justice and Democracy are planning to hold an unauthorized march in Managua at 09:00 (local time) on Sunday, November 25. The march is slated to begin near Colegio Teresiano and end in front of the main gate of Universidad Centroamericana (UCA); it has reportedly been organized to denounce violence against women, political prisoners, and low-income individuals and to express solidarity with the hundreds of people arrested in recent anti-government protests.

A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are to be expected near the march route. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Context

The UN has designated November 25 as the annual International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

Nicaragua has experienced widespread unrest amid calls for President Ortega to step down. The movement has led to frequent protests, deadly clashes, and other violence. Activists accuse the government and pro-government militias of committing serious human rights violations, including extrajudicial killings, using weapons of war against protesters, kidnappings, arbitrary detentions, torture, excessive use of force, raiding homes without a warrant, and attacking the press.

Advice

Individuals in Managua are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
