Protests continue on Monday, November 26, for the second consecutive day in the capital Kabul over the arrest of Shi’a militia leader Alipoor. Demonstrations turned violent once again causing severe road disruptions. Several hundred protesters gathered in the Pul-e-Sokhta area as of midday (local time) to demand the release of the militia leader, whose supporters say has been fighting the Taliban in several provinces. The protesters vow to continue their demonstrations until Alipoor is released. A heightened security deployment is in place.


Alipoor was arrested in Ghor province on November 25, sparking violent protests and roadblocks in the southwestern district of Kabul. Security forces fired warning shots to disperse protesters, who were throwing rocks at the police.


Individuals in Kabul should minimize nonessential movements until the protests subside.
