A vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) attack was reported in Chabahar (Sistan and Baluchestan province) on Thursday, December 6, which left at least two people dead and 40 others wounded. Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) troops have been deployed to secure the site of the bombing which took place outside a police headquarters on Shahid Rigi Boulevard. Ansar Al-Furqan has claimed responsibility for the attack. Similar Ansar Al-Furqan attacks are possible in Sistan and Baluchestan province over the near term.
Ansar Al-Furqan is a Sunni Baloch militant organization formed in 2013 and active in Sistan and Baluchestan province which aims to overthrow the Iranian regime. In December 2017, the group also claimed to have attacked an oil pipeline in Khuzestan province.
Individuals in Sistan and Baluchestan province, particularly those in Chabahar, are advised to avoid the area of the blast, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
