According to media reports, several people were injured in violent protests in Dire Dawa (Dire Dawa region) between January 21-24. The unrests have reportedly been sparked by an attack against a religous procession on January 21. Protests quickly evolved into demands by local residents for equal rights for jobs. Protesters reportedly burned tyres and blocked roads in the Addis Ketema, Dechatu, Sabian, Gende Kore, and Depot districts of the city. Further related protests are possible in the coming hours and days.
Individuals present in Dire Dawa are advised to monitor the situation, avoid any large gatherings and demonstrations due to the risk of violence, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities or their home government.
