On Tuesday, January 29, weather officials issued orange alerts (the second-highest on a four-tier scale) for 41 administrative regions due to adverse weather conditions (i.e. snow, wind gusts, ice) following the passage of winter storm Gabriel. The storm is expected to bring winds of up to 130 km/h (80 mph); the Vendée, Charente-Maritime, Gironde, and Landes departments are expected to be particularly affected. Heavy snowfalls between 5 to 10 cm (2 to 4 in) are also expected, notably in the north. According to forecasts, the storm will move inland in the east of France overnight on January 29-30. Related air and rail disruptions, hazardous driving conditions, and power outages are possible.
