Event

According to media reports, various groups of workers in Dire Dawa (Dire Dawa region) have announced an indefinite strike starting from Wednesday, January 30, to demand the release of local residents arrested following days of protests in the area between January 21-29.

On January 29, one person was killed in a mob attack amid violent protests.

An increased security presence have been deployed in the area to bring back order. Further related protests are, however, possible in the coming hours and days. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Context

Two people were killed and several others injured in violent protests in Dire Dawa between January 21-29. The unrests have reportedly been sparked by an attack against a religous procession on January 21. Protests quickly evolved into demands by local residents for equal rights for jobs.
