Event

Hundreds of civilians have fled recent violence in the western states of Rakhine and Chin as of Thursday, February 7. Fighting between the Burmese military and Arakan Army (AA), a separatist movement, has escalated in recent days. Bangladeshi border guards reported more than 130 people crossed the border from Rakhine state as of February 7, while an AA spokesman stated that 120 people have left their homes in Chin state to seek shelter in territory held by the rebel group. Continued violence in western Myanmar, particularly northern Rakhine state and southern Chin state, is expected to continue in the coming days and weeks as the military continues its offensive.

Context

Violence resumed in early December 2018 between Rakhine separatists and the military. At least 26 soldiers and rebels have died in the fighting and approximately 5000 civilians have been displaced.

Advice

Individuals in Myanmar, particularly Rakhine and Chin state, are advised to monitor developments to the situation, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.

Travelers are advised to avoid all but essential travel to Rakhine State, except the southern townships of Kyaukpyu, Ramree, Munaung, Toungup, Thandwe (including the tourist resort of Ngapali), and Gwa.
