Event

Emergency officials announced on Tuesday, February 19, that the current state of emergency in Nelson-Tasman region was extended for one week due to ongoing wildfires in the area. According to the Tasman district mayor, around 250 residents evacuated from the Eves, Redwood, and Teapot Valleys may be allowed to return to their homes as early as Thursday, February 21. However, over 3500 people remain under evacuation notice as firefighting efforts continue in the Pigeon Valley. Further spread of the fire, along with associated transportation disruptions and further evacuation orders, cannot be ruled out.

Context

The Nelson fire began near Pigeon Valley (Tasman district) on February 5 with local officials declaring a state of emergency on February 6. The region has seen minimal rain since October 2018.

Individuals present in the area are advised to monitor local weather and fire conditions and adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities (e.g. evacuation orders).
